This setting of the English-language version of this carol may be sung in four parts throughout, or, as indicated in the score, the first half of each verse is sung by either the women’s or the men’s voices. The full choir sings the second half of the verses. The refrain begins with just the women’s voices (singing the phrase in one breath, if possible) and continues with the full choir singing more strongly and with the close imitation between the soprano and alto voices pointed up.
