Psalms 42 and 43 are known as psalms of lament with themes and images of longing, thirst, water, light, and exile. Although it is not one of the seasonal psalms for Lent, it is especially appropriate throughout this season and in particular for the communal reconciliation services and the liturgy of the hours, especially, if combined with a Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling. Psalm 42/43 is the responsorial after the seventh reading of the Easter Vigil. This setting is scored in an ostinato format, but it could also be done in the more usual refrain/response manner. One could also combine both formats, beginning the responsorial mode and moving into the ostinato pattern halfway through.
