Drawing on early Christian musical traditions of modality, themselves hearkening back even to Judaic melodic traditions, Whitaker has crafted a sweet but wistful song, whose character is appropriate for the season of Advent. This flowing setting, set in triple meter for SAB choir, keyboard, guitar, and clarinet, features occasional melodic augmented seconds in the accompaniment, homophonic choral writing, and a clear harmonic and rhythmic scheme that will make this piece approachable to choirs of all abilities.
