Dynamics are key to performing this Christmastime piece, which—over its three verses—explores the dichotomy between our excitement at the call to discipleship and the quietness of Christ’s birth. The melody begins in a stepwise fashion but is enlivened by expressive leaps as it alternates between major and borrowed minor modalities. The complexity of the choral harmonies builds in each verse, beginning in unison and expanding to full SATB parts in the final verse. Optional parts are included for two solo instruments in C.
