Based on the well-known plainchant from the Liber cantualis, Barkoskie’s setting adds choral flourishes to certain phrases, enhancing the meaning of the text, while moving into a metrical, polyphonic setting of the tune. The melodic lines weave between each other seamlessly creating a beautiful harmonic structure, all of which is punctuated by a final series of “Amens.” It may be used as a motet for Holy Thursday, Corpus Christi, or throughout the year during or following the reception of Holy Communion.
