Howard Thurman’s well-known text gets a rich new musical setting in this octavo, featuring a soaring baritone solo with SATB choir—with some divisi—which functions alternately as backing vocal harmony or as a kind of commentary on, or response to, the solo voice. Instrumental parts for cello and harp contribute to the gorgeous sonic texture. Multilayered keyboard figures, extended harmonies, and several key changes make this piece a bit tricky to pull together, but adventurous choirs will be amply rewarded by the fantastic musical affect generated by this work.
